Executive Leadership
Shawna Smith, Executive Director
Shawna Smith joined Taller San in 1998. Since then, she lead the development of several long-term strategic projects including the construction training program, Taller Tech. Shawna received her degree in English from Santa Clara University and spent a year working with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Orange County. She has worked in numerous capacities in the non-profit sector including as a board member, volunteer, and advisor. In 2005, Shawna was selected as a Marano Fellow by the Aspen Institute.
Nancy Loughrey, Director of Finance
Nancy Loughrey joined Taller San Jose in 2004 and is responsible for all accounting functions of the organization. She also manages business systems and property maintenance. Nancy has been a Certified Public Accountant for 24 years and has extensive experience with small businesses, especially concentrating on nonprofits and computer software companies. She earned her BS in Finance from Pennsylvania State University and her MBA from University of Florida.
Karyn Mendoza, Director of Student Services
Karyn Mendoza joined Taller San Jose in 2008. As the Director of Student Services, Karyn ensures a continuum of service from application to job placement for students enrolled in training programs. She oversees all life skills curriculum components, case management staff, follow-up services for alumni, and oversees Taller San Jose’s job-readiness components. Karyn earned her BA in Sociology from California State University Long Beach and her MA in Social Work from the University of Southern California. She is a licensed clinical social worker.
Christa Sheehan, Director of Advancement
Christa Sheehan joined Taller San Jose in 1998, assisting in the long-term planning efforts, including strategic planning, fundraising campaigns, marketing campaigns, and advocacy initiatives. Prior to Taller San Jose, Christa was a Program Associate at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. and the Managing Editor of the Environmental Change and Security Project Report. Christa earned her BA, cum laude, in French/International Studies from Dickinson College and her MA in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. She became a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) in 2005.
Juana Perez, Director of Workforce Development
Juana Perez joined Taller San Jose in 2006, overseeing workforce training programs, maintaining quality and consistency in each training program, and ensuring mission alignment. She directs outreach efforts and maintains relationships with community partners. She earned her BA in Psychology and Ethnic Studies from University of California, Riverside, and MA in Public Policy and Administration with an Urban Affairs emphasis from California State University, Long Beach.
